Must Haves for Every Author Website: Plus…7 Tips for Creating Author Website Content

by Sandra Poirier Smith, President of Smith Publicity

As book publicists, we see huge value in an author’s website/blog. It serves as central hub where media, reviewers, and fans go to learn more about an author, his or her book, expertise, events, social media presence, etc. and hopefully becomes a place where viewers will be inspired to return and build a long term relationship.

Here are some items we recommend authors include on their website.  Of course, each website should be customized to the book, topic, and author’s personality.

  • Make it easy for people to purchase the book. Display your book cover on the home page and offer retail links to make it easy for people to order through the store of their choice (Amazon, B&N, etc.). Ideally the book cover, with buying links, should be on every page, even if small. Offer all the versions of the book available—hardcover, paperback, ebook, audiobook etc...READ MORE

Understanding Fonts & Typography

by Joel Friedlander

Continuing the discussion from our February 2015 newsletter on the importance of the outward appearance of a book, here is a deeper look into fonts and typography. Great information whether you are self-publishing or discussing design elements  with your publisher.

The design of your book has a critical part to play in how readable it is. Whether you’re designing the book yourself, or hiring a professional book designer, it pays to understand the basic building blocks that books are made of. Type fonts and they way they are arranged on the page—typography.

After deciding on the size of your book, the next big design decision is picking a type font for the body of your book. Although many classic book typefaces...READ MORE

Should You Find a Publisher or an Agent?

by Gini Graham Scott, Ph.D.

Here at Smith Publicity, authors often ask us if they should consider a publisher or agent, and if so how to begin. This article from the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) sheds some insights:

Should you pitch a project to publishers, agents, or both? While having an agent who is diligently pitching your book to major publishers is ideal, at other times, you are unlikely to get an agent (for example, if you have niche books), or even if you do, an agent can’t help very much.

Today, agents are super-selective in the projects they take on, since they are looking for the potential big book. So they are looking for writers who are already famous, have a large following in the social media...READ MORE

Congratulations to Smith Publicity’s 2015 Writer’s Scholarship winner!

We are pleased to announce our second scholarship winner: Reza Harris, a student at San Francisco State University. Harris was chosen from over 300 applicants. Harris said, “ I am very grateful to be selected as the winner. Applying for this scholarship was a challenge; I had to write the essay in the midst of all my studies for classes. There were times when I didn't feel so confident about my chances against so many competing students, but my better judgment told me to stick it out and take the chance. I am thrilled to learn that chance paid off.”

Smith Publicity offers an annual one-time $1,000 scholarship to one high school or college/university student in the United States. The scholarship is awarded to the student who submits the best essay on persuasive writing. We chose this topic because it’s an important part of the services we provide for book marketing.

Please visit Smith Publicity for our next scholarship announcement.
