Like most industries, we use lots of inside terms to succinctly describe and communicate what it is we do. At Smith Publicity we use common publicity-industry terms, but also our own language that has evolved over the years.

This is Smith Publicity’s 13th year exhibiting at BookExpo America (BEA), held again at the Javits Convention Center in New York City, Wednesday, May 27 – Friday, May 29, 2015.
According to BEA, their tradeshow is the “#1 book and author event that offers the book industry access to new titles, authors, networking, and education about the publishing industry.”
We are often asked by authors if they should attend and if so, what to expect. First, a short history. In the past several years, BEA organizers have shifted the hours, days and times of the show as they now try to serve two distinct audiences: publishing industry professionals and consumers.

Metadata in its simplest definition is data about data. So what does this mean for authors? Metadata is any information about your book that is not directly related to the plot. So your title, back cover blurb and keywords about your book are all your metadata. For authors looking to sell books online, metadata is important because it helps you and your book become more searchable to your audience.

Congratulations to Smith Publicity’s 2015 Writer’s Scholarship winner!
We are pleased to announce our second scholarship winner: Reza Harris, a student at San Francisco State University. Harris was chosen from over 300 applicants. Harris said, “ I am very grateful to be selected as the winner. Applying for this scholarship was a challenge; I had to write the essay in the midst of all my studies for classes. There were times when I didn't feel so confident about my chances against so many competing students, but my better judgment told me to stick it out and take the chance. I am thrilled to learn that chance paid off.”
Smith Publicity offers an annual one-time $1,000 scholarship to one high school or college/university student in the United States. The scholarship is awarded to the student who submits the best essay on persuasive writing. We chose this topic because it’s an important part of the services we provide for book marketing.
